Caravaggio early years

Caravaggio was born in Rome, where his father, Fermo Merisi, worked as administrator and architect decorator of the Marquis of Caravaggio, city of which later would take the name. His mother Lucia Aratori came from a wealthy family from the same place. In 1576 the family moved to Caravaggio because of the plague that struck Milan. Caravaggio’s father died in 1577. His closeness to the Colonna and Sforza families later assisted Caravaggio in his career. Read more
